RESUMO

An adult Goldfish (Carassius auratus) developed an exophitic, multinodular, mass in the dorsal region involving the fin. The clinical and pathologic approach included ultrasonography, cytology, histopathology, immunohistochemistry, and ultrastructural evaluation. B-mode and color Doppler ultrasonographic findings showed an oval, well-defined mass with slightly inhomogeneous parenchymatous echotexture associated with an intense intralesional vascularization. Cytology and histology revealed neoplastic pleomorphic spindle cells arranged in a storiform pattern or in palisades typical of Antoni A pattern schwannoma. Moderate anisocytosis and anisokaryosis and occasional binucleation were also present. The neoplastic tissue deeply infiltrated the skeletal muscle of the dorsal region. Immunohistochemistry showed a diffuse cytoplasmic immunoreactivity of neoplastic cells to S100 protein and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA); glial fibrillary acidic protein was negative. The PCNA proliferation rate was 23.5% (calculated as the mean of 10 fields). Ultrastructurally, neoplastic cells were juxtaposed with parallel nuclei forming the typical palisade pattern and sharing cytoplasmic and nuclear features with human schwannoma. This is the first cytologic description supplied with echographic investigation of a malignant schwannoma in a fish species.

RESUMO

A cholangiocarcinoma is reported in an 18-yr-old, female African lion (Panthera leo). The primary tumor consisted of multifocal to coalescing, hepatic, white-yellow masses distributed throughout the liver lobes. Metastases were present in regional lymph nodes, peritoneal surface, and lungs. Histologically, the tumor was characterized by a tubular pattern with alcian- and periodic acid-Schiff-positive secretory material in cystic spaces. The neoplastic cells were positive to broad-spectrum cytokeratins. Histochemical and immunohistochemical stains were consistent with bile duct carcinoma. Biliary tumors arising from the gallbladder have been reported in lions. However, to the authors' knowledge, this is the first case of intrahepatic bile duct carcinoma reported in an African lion.

OBJECTIVE: To determine glycohistochemical characteristics of enzootic nasal tumors (ENTs) of sheep, compare results for ENT with those of histologically normal nasal mucosa of sheep, and identify the histologic origin of ENT. SAMPLE: ENT and nasal mucosa samples obtained from cadavers of 5 adult Lacaune sheep with ENT and 5 Lacaune sheep unaffected by ENT, respectively. PROCEDURES: Samples of ENT and nasal mucosa were collected from cadavers of sheep and sectioned. Conventional and lectin histochemical analyses were used to identify glycoconjugates in tissue sections on the basis of their principal chemical groups and principal terminal or internal oligosaccharidic glucidic residues, respectively. RESULTS: ENTs had papillary and tubular portions. Cells in the papillary portion of ENTs had secretion and surface glycoconjugates, which included sulfated glycosaminoglycans and neutral and sialilated glycoproteins. Cells in the tubular portion of ENTs had surface glycoconjugates, which included neutral and sialilated glycoproteins. Both portions of ENTs had C(4)-acetylated sialoderivatives that were not detected in sections of histologically normal nasal mucosa. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The papillary portion of ENTs in sheep may originate from respiratory glands and goblet cells. The tubular portion of ENTs in sheep may originate from olfactory glands. Presence of C(4)-acetylated sialoderivatives in cells of ENTs could confer resistance against pathogens to those cells.
